VARIETY – Lisa Loven Kongsli, Sophie Cookson and Peter Franzen have joined Bel Powley in the World War II drama “Ashes in the Snow.”
Radiant International is launching sales at the Cannes Film Festival on “Ashes,” which is currently in production. Jonah Hauer-King, Martin Wallstrom, Sam Hazeldine, James Cosmo, Adrian Schiller and Tom Sweet also star.
Powley portrays a 16-year-old aspiring artist who is separated from her family amidst Stalin’s reign of terror in the Baltic region during World War II. She risks her life and uses her art to secretly send messages to her imprisoned father to let him know she is still alive.
Ramunas Greicius filmed the winter scenes earlier this year in Lithuania. The final summer scenes will shoot this May and June.
“Ashes” is based on Ruta Sepetys’ 2011 novel “Between Shades of Gray,” based on the true story of Irena Spakauskiene. The film adaptation is written by Ben York Jones (“Like Crazy”).
Director Marius Markevicius is also producing alongside Chris Coen and Zilvinas Naujokas. Jonathan Schwartz is executive producing. Markevicius directed the documentary “The Other Dream Team,” and produced “Like Crazy” and “The Way Back.”
Powley starred in “The Diary of a Teenage Girl.” Kongsli will play a warrior woman alongside Gal Gadot, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen in Warner Bros.’ “Wonder Woman.”
Cookson toplined “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Franzen appears in History Channel’s “Vikings.”
